Most Yemenis living in rural areas do not have access to any financial services due to the absence of banks and microfinance institutions. This makes it difficult for people to get funding to start small businesses. With support from the World Bank’s IDA, UNDP and its Yemen’s national partner, the Social Fund for Development (SFD), have created Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) to help Yemenis in rural Yemen save their money and secure financing for their small businesses to improve their income and livelihood. The VSLAs are effective at enhancing food security resilience and reducing poverty, helping Yemenis living in rural communities lead dignified lives, and supporting their resilience.
